SLAP-HAPPY / John Berbrich: hello, spring!

Posted by slap08 on March 22, 2009 at 7:11 PM

Well, spring arrived on Friday & then Saturday night we were blessed w/ an inch of snow.  But that really is no surprise.  To welcome in the long-awaited verdant season, a spontaneous poetry reading was held on Saturday afternoon at the Partridge Cafe in dullsville downtown Canton.  There wasn't much time to advertise, as evidenced by the small but tidy turnout.  Anyway, I opened the festivities w/ a half-dozen poems, followed by Nancy who read a like number.  Featured reader Janice Brabaw went next; Janice read one poem from her popular Universe, Disturbed collection, then read a number of others written quite recently, some within the past couple of weeks.  And Valerie Harrington finished up w/ a poem written by her nephew.  The event was convivial & we had a good time so what else can one ask for?

So what's next?  Our SLAP meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, March 31st, 2009, @ 6:30 in Morey Hall on the SUNY Potsdam campus, room 117.  We met in this exact spot last time & it worked out well, w/ plenty of room for everyone in a room disheveled enough for comfort.  The assignments have been passed out, but they are of course optional.  Newcomers should bring a few samples of their work & be prepared to share.  We are pretty nice, mostly.

And then there's the reading on Monday, April 6th @ the Asian World Import shop on Main Street in Potsdam @ 7:00.  This is a weird hat event for some reason, so please don appropriately bizarre headgear.  Maybe we'll have a contest or maybe not.  Either way it sounds like fun to me.  See you next time.
