SLAP-HAPPY / John Berbrich: Brooklyn comes to slc

Posted by slap08 on December 13, 2009 at 7:08 PM

That's right.  Hermon native Janice Brabaw has been living in Brooklyn for over a half-decade.  She'll be in town to visit & to promote her new book, Tongue for Folie, a collection of recent poems leaning way toward the emotional side of life.  Janice will be at the Brewer Bookstore at St. Lawrence University on Wednesday the 16th, from 6:30 - 8:00, selling signed copies of the new book.  And she'll be performing at the Fields coffee house in downtown Potsdam on Friday night, the 18th, from 8:00 - 10:00.  That's open-mike, so the general public is invited to listen & to take advantage of the open-mike.  Nancy & I plan to read at the Fields, & it would be great if a few more SLAP people showed up to give support.

Last Tuesday's Poetry For Peace reading at St. Lawrence went well.  The usual moderator Theo Hummer couldn't make it.  She asked me to fill in, which I did gladly.  Seven students showed up, a respectable figure.  I read a couple of poems from my Balancing Act chapbook, & Raymond Price, a student who's been to all four readings this semester, also read one of mine.  Three students read, in addition to Price: Courtney Hendrick read a poem of her own; Rachelle Doucette read a poem she had written in Spanish, & then gave us a rough English paraphrase; & Annalise Grueter read a poem by Robert Frost.  When we concluded the readings, we all hung around for maybe 20-25 minutes & talked, mostly about poetry.  We enjoyed a nice little time.

The next SLAP meeting is shrouded in mystery.  Looks like we've modified the date of the meetings to the second Tuesday of each month.  No venue yet chosen for January.  The assignment is a tough one, to write a bad poem.  Have to start working on that one.  I've got a few ideas.

Okay, I hope to see you all on Wednesday & Friday nights.  If not, may Santa be generous.  And I hope everyone enjoys a great holiday season.
