Okay, we had a very pleasant (though under-attended) meeting at Jernabi's last week. SLAPPERS on hand included myself, Nancy, & JeanMarie. Which was okay cuz we enjoyed some stimulating conversation, plus Jernabi's turns out to be pretty limited in regard to space. Our barista was Megan. I drank a delicious mocha latte, Nancy was satisfied w/ a huge cup of tea, & JeanMarie chugged down something strong in a demitasse. We exchanged our completed assignments, after which JeanMarie suggested our next assignment, writing a truly bad poem. Doesn't sound hard, I know, but there's more to it than that. I'll explain anon.
We have a couple of upcoming events. First, there's a poetry slam at SUNY Potsdam next Saturday, the 5th. The festivities are divided into two sections. The first is open to anyone to read any poem they like. The second section is the Slam, open to anyone. You get three minutes to read your own poems w/ no preambles. The winner is chosen by a set of three tendentious judges & will be awarded $50!! The slam will be held at 7:00 at Hurley's, below the Lehman dining center. I plan to attend & would like to see a few other SLAPPERS there also. The second event will be an open-mike poetry reading by Janice Brabaw. I'm trying to set something up at the Fields in Potsdam, on either the 17th, 18th, or 19th of December. Janice will be promoting her new book, Tongue for Folie, just released. So come out & support another starving poet. More info when the date is set.
And that's it for tonight. I'm planning a SLAP poetry newsletter for January so please send me some new poems. Anyone who has an idea for a venue for a reading, please let me know. I'd like to try out a few new places. And bring a friend or two. I'd like to see a few new faces.
