Indeed, suddenly there's a lot going on right now. Unfortunately the most recent SLAP meeting was snowed-out, & has not been rescheduled yet. There are two readings coming up, but first, a little info regarding a poetry event held two weeks ago.
October is New York State Archives Month, & what better way to celebrate than a poetry reading at the Historical Museum in Canton. This was a lunch hour, brown bag sort of thing, w/ refreshments served. Sue Longshore kicked off the reading w/ two poems written by Cornelius Carter from roughly 1900. Betsy Baker read a few poems from the recently deceased local poet James Todd. JeanMarie Martello read works from old time county residents, Irving Bachellor, George Lucien Crary, & Oringe Smith Crary, plus one from current resident & SLAP member Judy Brassard. Max Coots, Dale Hobson, & myself finished up w/ some original poetry. For me, Hobson's marvelous historical poems were the highlight.
And coming up, as I stated earlier, we've two readings, each hosted by SLAP. The first will be held at the Partridge Cafe in downtown Canton on Saturday, November 8th, @ 6:00. The featured poet will be Janice Brabaw, reading from her new book, Universe Disturbed. Janice grew up in the Hermon-Dekalb area, graduated from SLU in 2001, & has been living down in Brooklyn ever since. She'll be reading along w/ several SLAP members, & I'm sort of getting the idea that a decent crowd might be expected. Janice was recently featured in articles in the Watertown Daily Times & the Gouverneur Tribune. So this should be a great time for all.
And of course the next reading on November 15th is at the Creative Spirit art center on Raymond Street in Potsdam. That's at 5:00. Featured poet will be Neal Zirn reading from his new book, Manhattan Cream. Guest poet will be Beth Konkoski from Virginia. And that should be another marvelous night. Let's hope we don't get nailed w/ another malicious snowstorm.
And I'm still looking for poetry for the SLAP newsletter. I'll take anything by anyone from anywhere, really. Thanks.
