Yes, indeed, the reading at the Fields coffeehouse in Potsdam did come off without a hitch last Friday night. Janice Brabaw was up from Brooklyn promoting her new poetry collection, Tongue For Folie. We attracted a decent crowd, roughly 15 people altogether, not bad for a Friday night when college is between semesters. Janice started off w/ seven or eight poems from the new book, most of which express a confused chaos that so often seems to be Janice's inner li...

That's right. Hermon native Janice Brabaw has been living in Brooklyn for over a half-decade. She'll be in town to visit & to promote her new book, Tongue for Folie, a collection of recent poems leaning way toward the emotional side of life. Janice will be at the Brewer Bookstore at St. Lawrence University on Wednesday the 16th, from 6:30 - 8:00, selling signed copies of the new book. And she'll be performing at the Fields coffee house in downtown Pot...

Okay, we had a very pleasant (though under-attended) meeting at Jernabi's last week. SLAPPERS on hand included myself, Nancy, & JeanMarie. Which was okay cuz we enjoyed some stimulating conversation, plus Jernabi's turns out to be pretty limited in regard to space. Our barista was Megan. I drank a delicious mocha latte, Nancy was satisfied w/ a huge cup of tea, & JeanMarie chugged down something strong in a demitasse. We exchanged our completed assignment...

That's right--this Thursday night is Fright Night in Potsdam! And SLAP will host a humongous open-mike poetry reading at the St. Lawrence County Arts Council on Market Street in downtown Potsdam. The festivities start at 7:00, w/ prizes for the most gruesome poem & for the best costume. Bring a couple of poems & a couple of friends.
I'd like to remind everyone to listen to the Howie & the Wolfman radio show on Saturday afternoon, 1:00 - 3...

Well, the meeting last Tuesday was a great deal of fun. We shared our poems from April's endurance test, writing a poem a day. This might not sound like a lot, but try it some time. Those who completed the challenge include Nancy, JeanMarie, Kelly Frost, & myself. The assignment for next time is to write a poem in the form of a letter, or a letter in the form of a poem. I think it works out to the same thing. By "letter" I don't mean a letter of the alp...

Well, spring arrived on Friday & then Saturday night we were blessed w/ an inch of snow. But that really is no surprise. To welcome in the long-awaited verdant season, a spontaneous poetry reading was held on Saturday afternoon at the Partridge Cafe in dullsville downtown Canton. There wasn't much time to advertise, as evidenced by the small but tidy turnout. Anyway, I opened the festivities w/ a half-dozen poems, followed by Nancy who read a like number. Fea...

Breaking story!!! There's a reading at the Partridge Cafe in downtown Canton next Saturday, March 21st, @ 4:00 in the afternoon. Everyone is invited to make use of the glittering hi-tech imaginary mike & to listen to featured reader Janice Brabaw who is driving up from Brooklyn for this brief poetry barnstorming tour of the North Country. Janice's latest book Universe, Disturbed has sold quite well & has received good reviews. I know that she's been writ...

Well, it's been a busy time for active poets in the north country. Last Wednesday, November 5th, was the Poetry for Peace reading at St. Lawrence University. The theme was the Politics of Hunger, suggested at the previous reading by JeanMarie Martello. JeanMarie & I both read, representing SLAP. I try to stay away from political material & read two poems about hungry cats. The only student who read was Eric Luc. Those poets who participated &am...

Indeed, suddenly there's a lot going on right now. Unfortunately the most recent SLAP meeting was snowed-out, & has not been rescheduled yet. There are two readings coming up, but first, a little info regarding a poetry event held two weeks ago.
October is New York State Archives Month, & what better way to celebrate than a poetry reading at the Historical Museum in Canton. This was a lunch hour, brown bag sort of thing, w/ refreshmen...
